Frequently asked questions.

Do I need special car insurance to go off-roading?

This and everything else on this website does not constitute legal advice. You do not need anything beyond standard, legal car insurance in order to go off-roading as a hobby. If you plan to off-road with any regularity, consider exploring ways of upping the insurance premium you pay on your vehicle in order to cover any major damage.

Will I damage my vehicle?

The only damage taken by vehicles that we have ever witnessed has come as a result of carelessness, not the hobby. There exists the very real risk of damage to your vehicle, particularly since we will be traveling on old, rocky forest roads crowded by the hazards of nature and happenstance. Some amount of pinstriping on your paint is a near certainty. Accidents do happen, but they are incredibly rare.

Can my car/truck/van/SUV go?

Just about any vehicle with 4x4 or AWD will be able to traverse the Starter Trails. The Intermediate and Advanced Trails will require increasing amounts of ground clearance and armoring. Fill out an inquiry form for the course you are interested in attending and we can help you with the particulars of your vehicle.

Do I need to have ‘x,’ ‘y,’ or ‘z’…?

Each vehicle is unique and so we encourage you to fill out an inquiry form for the course you are interested in attending so we can give you specific recommendations for your vehicle. In general, the following are the required for each course:

Starter Trails: no special equipment needed, though we recommended everyone have differential and transfer-case breathers/breather extensions
Intermediate Trails: underbody skid plate armoring for your engine, transfer case, transmission, and - for full-size vehicles - fuel tank
Advanced Trails: all-terrain tires, differential and transfer case breathers/breather extensions, underbody skid plate armoring (see Intermediate Trails); rock sliders and paint protection are recommended

What happens if we get stuck?

A designated Recovery Vehicle accompanies every group, and in the unlikely event that anyone gets stuck, it can either tow or winch the stricken vehicle out.

I don’t have a 4x4, but want to go! Do you have one that I can rent?

Not yet on the rentals, but some of the instructors use their vehicles to teach. Reach out and we can arrange to have you driving one of our off-roaders!
